Lawrence North offers Four levels of concert band, with each level focused on musicianship, performance, and growth as an individual and as an ensemble. If you would like more information on any of our concert band programs, click here to email Connor Vaughn, Director of Bands.

Wind Ensemble 4

The Wind Ensemble is the Premiere Band at Lawrence North. This band is comprised of upperclassmen, and a few outstanding underclassmen, who have proven their ability to play more complex and challenging music. Students perform a varied repertoire for several concerts throughout the school year. Students in the Wind Ensemble are expected to take private lessons. The LN Wind Ensemble competes at the annual ISSMA State Concert qualifications, with the goal of making Indiana Concert Band State Finals.

Symphonic Band 3

The Symphonic Band is our intermediate band. Symphonic Band is the stepping stone from the beginning level Concert Bands to the Wind Ensemble, giving students the experience needed to improve their playing skills while learning more advanced music. Students perform in multiple concerts throughout the year, and in the ISSMA competition each spring.

Concert Band 2

The Concert Band is an entry level band designed for performers who play at a Group 3 level. Students begin the year learning fundamentals, focusing on instrument techniques and how to develop their musical ability. Throughout the year, students are gradually introduced to more advanced music and performance techniques. Concert band students perform at multiple concerts throughout the year, and in the ISSMA competition each spring.

Concert Band 1

Concert Band 1 is an Beginner level band designed for beginning level performers. Students in this group spend their year working out of a fundamental book, to learn the skills needed to move into the next band. Ideally, students who are in this group are able to learn and move up as seen fit throughout the school year.

The LN Jazz Band focuses on developing the musicianship and performance skills necessary for all types of instrumental jazz. Students are introduced to a variety of musical styles, including Dixieland, big band-style swing, bebop, Latin jazz fusions, and smooth jazz. Students are also encouraged to branch out from the written notes into the world of jazz improvisation. Learning is enhanced through the expertise of guest conductors, clinicians, and professional jazz musicians.

The Jazz Band competes at Jazz Festivals such as the Heritage Music Festival, the Ball State Jazz Festival, and the Purdue Jazz Festival. They also perform in multiple concerts throughout the year at LN, including the Jazz Cafe fundraising concert each spring. If you would like more information on our Jazz Band program, click here to email Connor Vaughn, Director of Bands.

Lawrence North's percussion program has grown exponentially over the years, providing students the opportunity to perform at both the high school and professional level. Many of our percussionists have gone on to pursue music majors at colleges throughout the nation, becoming professional musicians and music educators.

Percussion students perform with the Wind Ensemble, Symphonic Band, Concert Band, and Jazz Band at concerts throughout the season. Many of our percussionists also participate in the Lawrence Township marching band and winter percussion programs.
